Senior Corrosion Technician-Cathodic Protection
•Experience in plant sampling, chemical analysis in industrial laboratory or cathodic protection work, on a utilities system or similar pipeline network, but preferably within the hydrocarbon industry
•Schedules field work required to monitor and control corrosion inhibition including cathodic protection.Arranges and assists in installation/retrieval of corrosion mitigation devices. Develops schedule of monitoring and undertakes measurement on monitoring devices, CP stations, Ground beds/anodes, test posts, bond boxes etc. Analyses test results, reports, discuss and take corrective measures with the approval of Corrosion Engineer. Maintains test results/reports as well as monitoring equipment in an up-to-date condition.
Completion of secondary ( 12 years) education
7 - Years formal full time training in Chemistry/physics, or Ordinary National Diploma level standard or equivalent
•Coordinates all CP related works with contractors' such as installation of sacrificial anodes for road crossings/culverts, excavation formalities, and safety too.
•Operates computer to store data related to all activities. Feeding of all technical details and retrieves the details/data when required.
•Analyses all field data on cathodic protection against established standard for protection. Reports and discusses with Corrosion Engineer and assists in planning remedial actions. Prepares data sheets compiles weekly summary, prepares monthly spread sheets recording such data and recording maintenance work on system, and maintains related filling and record system.
•Maintains inventory of field equipment and field tool kits, probes, anodes, batteries and other minor components. Periodically updates records on the basis of withdrawals noted, and completes appropriate materials requisition order forms to replenish stores, ensuring adequate lead time is allowed and allocating costs to correct job numbers.
•Logs down shut down/start-up periods of all plants and correlate corrosion parameters and retriever such data as and when required.
•Estimates Contractor's works (Capital & routine) such as major and minor works ex- rehabilitation of anodes, installation of sacrificial anodes at road crossings/culverts, cathodic protection remedial works, renovation of CP system, engineering constancy services, etc.
•Carries out other similar or related duties such as participating in or undertaking the work of technicians working on other systems when absent or on leave; accompanying consultants to field sites and assisting in the taking of specialised CP survey measurements (such as DCVG, CIPS
•Exercises good housekeeping and observing all safety precautions in all work activities.
•Develops work schedules to monitor and control corrosion cathodic protection systems, both Impressed, and sacrificial on all CP-protected assets.
•Tests the continuing effectiveness of the cathodic protection systems, on a routine basis in accordance with work schedule. Visits designated stations and test points along pipelines, to check station outputs and drain point potentials. Checks the continuing operation and levels of current across bonds between pipes. Logs readings and checks status of station generators and transformer/rectifiers or other power sources/supplies, anode cable and busbar chambers.
•Takes readings from corrosion monitoring points in accordance with schedule.
•Reports any defects or damage to CP systems to Corrosion Engineer and arranges to carry out remedial work.
•Prepares and presents preliminary reports of anomalous CP readings to Corrosion
•Engineer, and assists in preparing the final report.
•Takes measurements at specific points and carries out certain on-site testing and investigation work. Obtains Hot or Cold Work Permits as applicable.
•Undertakes detailed measurements of cathodic protection system as per schedule including taking current discharge readings from all buried protective anodes, testing potentials along pipeline at all test points, checking all isolation joints at plant entrances, testing bonds, and ensuring that all stations and related power sources/supplies are operational. Carries out soil resistivity, pH and redox potential surveys on pipelines if required.
•Determines the need for groundbed rehabilitation. Prepares replacement anodes and other groundbed items and coordinating in excavation work by contractors, removing and replacing anodes and making required connections, setting up marker posts and test points and checking backfilling.Checks operability of ground beds after rehabilitation.
•Checks and coordinate in the work of contractors to ensure that pipes are fully protected, that insulation joints are properly isolating, and that pipeline trenches are backfilled with sand or other approximate material. Tests bonds and insulation joints following contractors' work.
•Takes reading from specially installed buried probes, involving visiting surface test points over probes, taking reading to obtain electrochemical corrosion measurements. Logs readings, reports any apparent defects or damage to Corrosion engineer and arranges to carry out corrective measures.
•Checks inhibitor levels and injection rates. Advises production personnel to adjust feed rate as necessary for special testing purposes or to increase protection as requested by Head of Corrosion and Coating. Undertake field trials to help evaluate various corrosion inhibitors.
•Operates instruments such as DVM, Flange tester, Copper-sulphate electrodes, etc and calibrates them periodically. Report any malfunctioning of such instruments and arrange for their maintenance.
